My name is Tais De Los Reyes. My husband Adam, a US Navy veteran, and I are the owners of Athena’s Cantina on Route 1 in Freeport, where we serve up fine Latin Fusion cuisine—specializing mostly in Mexican and Brazilian—in an atmosphere that welcomes everyone.

Besides raising our family here, we’ve accomplished so much since we arrived in Freeport in 2018. The most important thing is that we started our restaurant just a few weeks before Covid hit, and using our wits and good business sense, we survived! We have built our business against all odds. As new business owners, we are excited about bringing new business into Freeport, always respectful of those that are already established in this wonderful town we are so blessed to be part of.

We first got the idea to start a food truck park after working so hard with the town of Freeport to allow food trucks. It all started with a food trailer that we began operating in July 2019. Just months after opening, we were informed that our town had no regulations for food trailers and in turn changed our classification to a food truck. Due to the town not allowing food trucks, we were forced to close.

Not ready to quit, we sought to not only change zoning and regulations but look into a brick-and-mortar establishment. As not to lose momentum, we decided to open Athena's Cantina on February 22, 2020, just two weeks before the pandemic shut down everything. We were scared and had no idea what we had just gotten ourselves into, but we were already so invested that we took that time to learn about our new business and work with the town to eventually bring something new and exciting to our community.

After a lot of hard work and patience, we now see massive growth in new food truck businesses participating in Freeport events. We believe in our food truck community and respect the everyday hard work that goes into owning a mobile restaurant. Our goal is to have a space where you have a consistent home for the season. We want to open doors and opportunities for potential brick-and-mortar and long-lasting business relationships.
